The Alabama Center for Traditional Culture (ACTC) is the folk and traditional arts division of the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA). The ACTC Director, with a team of folklorists, runs programs to identify, document, and present Alabama’s indigenous art traditions. The Director reports to the ASCA Executive Director and collaborates frequently with program managers, a radio producer, and a communications specialist.

The Director manages Folklife Project Grants, oversees the Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program, supports the Arts Fell on Alabama radio program, and can pursue various projects and partnerships. Previous ACTC initiatives include the Alabama Folklife Festival, community scholar institutes, documentary recordings, teacher workshops, traveling exhibits, a public television series, scholarly articles, symposia, music tours, and exhibits in ASCA’s Gallery. The Director also works closely with the Alabama Folklife Association, a statewide partner.

The Council is based in Montgomery and serves all Alabamians with the mission to enhance quality of life and economic vitality by providing support for the state’s diverse and rich artistic resources. Established in 1967, ASCA has a professional staff of seventeen and operates with an annual state appropriation of over $6,000,000 and $950,000+ in federal funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. Last year, 470 grants were awarded to 291 organizations, schools, and individual artists. ASCA also produces annual projects and special events, promoting arts education and creative place-making initiatives statewide.

Council on the Arts offices are located in the RSA Tower in downtown Montgomery. This position requires full-time, in-person attendance and is not eligible for remote or hybrid work. State employees enjoy robust employment and retirement benefits. Salary range: $46,900-$78,550.
