Mehmet İlhan Başgöz, 1921–2021
We are saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Emeritus Mehmet İlhan Başgöz on April 13, 2021 in Ankara, Turkey at the age of 100. In his own words, he was born in the Anatolian town Gemerek-Sivas “during the barley harvesting season of 1921.”
Dr. Başgöz was a major scholar in Turkish Folklore and culture, and he received many distinguished awards from the Guggenheim, the Turkish Ministry of Culture, & in 2019 an IU Bicentennial Medal. For more information about his impressive life achievement, visit his profile on IU’s website.
