Miami Tribe of Oklahoma Invites Applicants for College Internships

Professional Opportunities

The Miami Tribe of Oklahoma invites applicants for college internships in anthropology, archaeology, history, computer science, GIS, and related fields. The Miami Tribe is a federally recognized Tribal Nation with over 5,500 citizens who considers the lower great lakes its original homeland and, through multiple forced removals, now governs from Miami, Oklahoma.

The staff seeks interns to work alongside Miami Tribe staff and professionals to complete the Miami Tribe NAGPRA Consultation Resources (MTNCR) project that will support institutions that comply with the law with their inventories yet require assistance and information before establishing consultation. Specifically, the project will supply Miami Tribe repatriation information to those institutions not currently in compliance with NAGPRA to foster a more informed and successful consultation process. The completed project will establish a website replete with historical documentation, source information, layered map, and PDF documents to support a consultation-to-repatriation process. The staff will accept six interns in the fields of anthropology, archeology, history, computer science, and GIS.

The Miami Tribe of Oklahoma has a well established internship program with the Tribe’s Cultural Resources Office that has been operating for ten years. The interns will be employees and will experience the same interview and hiring process used for standard employment. The Miami Tribe does apply Indian Preference in its hiring practices.

The MTNCR project consists of four phases: Research, Document Generation, Map Creation, Website Creation, to be completed within two years. The internship duration depends on these phases and carries an hourly rate of $13.00 up to 480 hours. Due to the pandemic, interns will work virtually with the possibility of on-site participation to be determined.
