At the 1998 AFS annual meeting in Portland, a group of folklorists headed by Maria Herrera-Sobek and Norma E. Cantú initiated this section, devoted to the study of Chicano and Chicana folklore. In addition to gathering at the AFS annual meeting, members also convene at the meetings of the Latin American Studies Association and the National Chicano and Chicana Studies Association meetings. At the AFS annual meeting, we meet with the Folklore Latino, Latinoamericano y Caribeño Section to plan panel discussions, paper sessions, forums, and a social outing.
The Chicano and Chicana Section of the American Folklore Society maintains a listserv for its members and for the members of the Folklore Latino, Latinoamericano y Caribeño Section. Our plans for the future include publications and actively working with the Minority Task force to increase Chicano and Chicana membership in AFS. We welcome anyone interested in any and all aspects of Chicano and Chicana traditional cultural expression.
