Veterans Oral History Workshops

Since 2002, the AFS has been engaged in a partnership with the Veterans History Project, an effort of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress originally supported by the US Congress and AARP. In 2013, the Oral History Association joined us in this partnership. AFS and OHA provide experienced  folklorists and oral historians to lead workshops for community groups of all kinds throughout the country that teach the basic communication and technical skills for interviewing US war veterans to document their personal experience narratives and oral histories. During this time, the folklorists and oral historians engaged in this effort have led almost 400 workshops for some 9,000 participants in 40 of the 50 states. The Veterans History Project’s video introduction to conducting such interviews is available at http://www.loc.gov/vets/companion-video.html.
