Georgetown University Seeks Provost Distinguished Faculty Fellow and Assistant Professor of Music
The Department of Performing Arts at Georgetown University invites applications for a full-time tenure-line Assistant Professor position specializing in Black American music to begin on August 1, 2025. The deadline for applications is Nov 10, 2024.
The department seek candidates with expertise in Black vernacular and/or Black art music, including, for instance, jazz, hip-hop, blues, R&B, gospel, and soul, and an ability to teach introductory music theory and analysis. The position welcomes scholars engaged in new approaches to studying music, including technologically enhanced research methodologies, performance as a research method, and examining intersections between music, race, class, gender, government policy, and cultural practice.
For the first year of this position, the successful candidate will hold the title of Provost’s Distinguished Faculty Fellow and will have no teaching and service responsibilities. This will allow focus on completing research projects while receiving mentorship from two senior faculty members. A 2-2 teaching load follows the fellowship year.
Teaching responsibilities will include introductory and upper-level courses in Black American music, introductory music theory and analysis, and areas aligned with the candidate’s research interests. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in strengthening our American Musical Cultures major and expanding our curricular offerings.
Salary range: $84,910.00 – $94,344.00/year
Qualifications: Ph.D. or DMA in a relevant music discipline or in related studies by August 1, 2025.
Candidates should demonstrate expertise in Black American music, theory, and analysis, representing a broad array of perspectives and methodologies. They must be able to teach and conduct research across various Black American musical genres and practices and engage with current trends in the field.
