Center for Rural Strategies Launches Living Traditions Program

News from the Field

Living Traditions is a multimedia storytelling project about folklife in central Appalachia that showcases stories about traditional arts and folklife. The project spotlights how these practices bring communities together, solve problems, and how they serve as the bedrock for Appalachia’s rich cultural landscape.

Over the next several years, Living Traditions will produce videos, audio stories, and written articles about traditional cultural practices within the Appalachian counties of six states:  Kentucky, Ohio, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The stories will be published through The Daily Yonder, Rural Strategies’ online platform for news, information, and storytelling about and for rural America.  Audio stories will stream through the Rural Remix podcast feed.

Living Traditions has already published a handful of stories and has an exciting lineup in the works. A newsletter sign-up and all published stories are available at https://dailyyonder.com/living-traditions/.

Living Traditions is always on the lookout for interesting story ideas and for freelance media makers, folklorists, community scholars, tradition bearers, and artists who want to pitch a story.  If you’d like to be in touch, please email Nicole Musgrave, Living Traditions Project Director, at nicole.p.musgrave@gmail.com.
