AFS News, Calls for Submissions

Herman Beavers, the 2026–27 president of the Modern Language Association (MLA), has chosen Emancipatory Narratives as the presidential theme for the 2027 MLA Annual Convention which will take place January 7–10 in Los Angeles, CA.

AFS@MLA invites proposals for papers on this theme, which may explore how folk narratives may act as emancipatory forces by providing diverse folk groups with tools to reclaim their histories, promote solidarities, and strengthen cultural identities. Because this is a session sponsored by the American Folklore Society, preference will be given to proposals from AFS members.
