Founded in 1976 by graduate students from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador and Université Laval, Culture & Tradition annually publishes a wide array of creative and academic works that explore folklore topics in both English and French.

The journal is now accepting submissions for Volume 37 (2026) on the theme of “Carnivalesque.” It seeks contributions that explore the carnivalesque in all its forms. Contributors are encouraged to explore the carnivalesque through a diverse range of topics, including, but not limited to:

  • Festivals and rituals
  • Folktales and storytelling
  • Circuses, fairs, and other liminal spaces
  • Theatre, costumes, and disguise
  • Queerness and gender transgression
  • Decolonization and Indigeneity
  • Music and musical performance
  • Digital cultures and video games
  • Portrayals of the beautiful and the grotesque
  • Political action and organization
  • Visual arts and film
  • Knowledge acquisition and transfer
  • Superstition and belief

While this volume is themed, the journal also welcomes general submissions that reflect the diversity and interdisciplinarity of contemporary folklore and ethnology. Submissions may include:

  • Scholarly articles (5,000 word maximum)
  • Research creation projects that integrate creative practice with ethnographic, archival, or theoretical inquiry (format flexible; may include accompanying artist/research statements)
  • Book or media reviews (500–1,500 words) on works related to folklore, ethnomusicology, and related studies.

The deadline for submissions is January 24, 2026.

Culture & Tradition is also concurrently seeking graduate students, emerging scholars, and emerging/aspiring artists as peer reviewers for its forthcoming volume. Interested in reviewing for the journal? Learn about the basics and join the reviewer pool on their website.
