The Department of the History of Art and Architecture at Tufts University invites graduate students to submit paper proposals for their 2025 Graduate Symposium titled Praxis and Promise: Reenvisioning Art Historical Methodologies for Cultural Heritage, which will be held on April 18, 2025 in Medford, MA.

The symposium aims to foster critical discussions around the limitations of art historical methodologies and welcomes interdisciplinary approaches that challenge and reimagine the way art history is practiced, taught, and understood. Papers should engage with broader themes such as diaspora, identity, gender, and the politics of preservation, focusing on how these concepts intersect with art historical methodologies. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Rethinking the promises and failures of art historical methodologies
  • Addressing methodological limitations in times of war and political unrest
  • Reimagining methodologies for marginalized regions
  • Cultural heritage and diaspora: preserving identity and memory across time and space
  • The future of cultural heritage preservation

Submission Guidelines:

The symposium invites proposals for 20-minute papers. Please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words, along with a current CV, to tuftsart.grad.symposium@gmail.com by December 20, 2024. Participants will be notified by January 20, 2025.
