Arts Organizations: Rethinking Our Roles
August 5, 2021 at 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm EDT
For their fourth and final panel in this series of technical assistance workshops, which takes place virtually on August 5th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM EDT, the Philadelphia Folklore Project will continue the discussion from the diverse perspectives of four professional folklorists, arts administrators, and culture workers stationed in various capacities at organization’s around the country. While recognizing that folklorists can also be practitioners just as artists, administrators, this panel will look specifically at the power dynamics embedded within negotiating cultural appropriation when tasked with advocating for and managing scarce resources such as funding, professional opportunities, and cultural assets.
Participants will discuss how they define terms such as an “authentic lived experience,” “folk artist,” “traditionality,” and “appropriation” in the field today, and reflect on how those definitions interface with and impact cultural production in various settings ranging from grant applications and apprenticeship programs to program content and strategic partnerships. They will also examine the politics of advocating for folklife and traditional arts in larger art and funding spaces and whether our field’s definitions and protocols are properly serving us and our constituents or having unintended consequences we need to reconsider.
There will be panel discussions followed by small group workshops.
Timeframe:
Panel: 75 mins
Break: 5 minutes
Breakout Sessions: 40 mins
RSVP to watch the panel via Zoom and/or if you would like to participate in the small group workshops immediately following the panel discussions.
