Hear from Harrisburg: Magnificent Healing: A Reader’s Theater by the Pennsylvania Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Network
August 12, 2021 at 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm EDT
Join us for a screening and discussion of Pennsylvania Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Network’s production, “Magnificent Healing,” a reader’s theater exploration of immigrant and refugee women’s experiences with the U.S. healthcare system and their collisions with practitioners, August 12, 7:00 pm EDT.
Magnificent Healing focuses on health issues, presenting the personal stories of four refugee/immigrant women who have faced challenges in the medical world. Told with empathy and humor, as if the women are sitting around the kitchen table, the stories highlight issues of interpretation, cultural expectations, and differing attitudes toward health and healing. One woman is forced to rely on her estranged husband as the interpreter for her visits to the doctor. Another must contend with the physical effects and cultural misunderstandings of female circumcision. In between these stories, snippets of other experiences are shared by the “chorus.”
Nelsy Acosta, Zohreh Akhtar, Betty Itunga, Ho-Thanh Nguyen will represent PAIRWN, in discussion with moderator Amy Skillman, on August 12 at 7:00 pm EDT.
