Waterworlding: Reflecting on Multiple Waters

June 17, 2021 June 19, 2021 Virtual program, Marburg, Germany

The Institute for European Ethnology and Cultural Studies at the University Marburg invites participants to their digital international and interdisciplinary conference, “Waterworlding: Reflecting on Multiple Waters,” which takes place June 17-19.

The conference assembles researchers from diverse geographical regions who conduct cultural, artistic and/or social anthropological research in the field of a new topicality of water. The conference program shows the variety in which current concepts grasping water have been developed in recent years and still are developing. The diverse contributions discuss in different formats (keynotes, papers, posters and art projects) and are informed by cultural studies/anthropology/history the various ways in which water can be thought as a complex of interdependencies. Individual panels deal with everyday waters, migration or war and their water entanglements, multi-species encounters, underwater aesthetics or negotiations about the application of (alternative) water technologies. Moreover, a particular focus lies on theoretical challenges posed by water as a research subject to be decolonized.

Beside keynotes participants can take from the program, conference organizers would like to particularly draw attention to the art projects presented in the context of the conference:

  • Carina Pesch: „Weiße Elster“: Sound Walk
  • Emanuele Fantini: Gramsci on the Nile: notes on cultural hydro-hegemony
  • Melissa Lefkowitz: Swim Lesson: a sensory-based documentary short on the experience of moving through water as a novice swimmer
  • Sarah Mohr und Linda Weiss: The Semiotics of Slime – Rethinking water based solidarity with matter
  • Sarah Bildstein/Tanja Klemm: 100 Spectres
