Louie W. Attebery (1927–2024)

Longtime AFS member Louie Attebery died on August 21, 2024, at the age of 97. He wrote a dissertation on the folklore of the lower Snake River Valley in 1961 and taught American literature and folklore at The College of Idaho. He published an early article on urban legend, co-edited the book Idaho Folklife: Homesteads to Headstones with Sandy Rikoon, and served as editor of Northwest Folklore. His later work included a biography of Idaho billionaire J. R. Simplot, a study of traditional sheep-ranching methods in central Idaho, and a memoir titled Monroe Creek to the World: A Life in Letters. In 2024, the College of Idaho established an endowed professorship in his name.  Donations in his memory may be given to the Attebery Family Scholarship Fund at The College of Idaho.
