The Middle Atlantic Folklife Association (MAFA) has transitioned to the Mid-Atlantic Folklife Section of the American Folklore Society (AFS). Current co-conveners Betty Belanus and Marion Jacobson are happy to announce that it is now possible for AFS members to join the Section so that they can begin building a comprehensive mailing list and a space for community communication. At this time, they do not have a dues structure, so you will not need to pay anything to join.

You will find instructions walking you through joining the Section below.

The co-conveners would also like to invite everyone interested to a virtual Section meeting to kick things off, on March 18, 2026 at 3:00 pm ET.

How to Join the Section:

1. You must be an AFS member in good standing. Go to the AFS Website and log in with your member credentials.

2. After logging in to the Member Portal, look to the menu on the left and hit “My Info.” You will see general information in the middle left hand of the screen, and a list of Sections and Committees you are already a member of on the right.

3. Hit the small plus sign to the right of the heading of Sections and Committees and it will give you a list of Sections you may join. Search for or scroll down to Mid-Atlantic Folklife Section and add it to your list.
