Oppose an Amendment to Eliminate Funding for the NEH

News from the Field

Representative Josh Brecheen (R-OK-02) recently introduced an amendment to the FY 2025 Interior Appropriations bill that would drastically cut funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). In the coming days, the House will likely vote on the amendment. The amendment would cut the NEH’s FY 25 funding to $150 million—a $57 million cut from its FY 24 funding level and a $53.9 million cut from the House’s current proposed funding for FY 25.

With advocacy, this proposed amendment might fail as it will be seen as taking humanities funding away from regions across the US that often lack such resources, especially to organizations and projects in rural regions that host historical and cultural programs that are meaningful to citizens across the US.

It is urgent to act fast to ensure that Members of Congress reject this amendment. Please issue an action alert and urge your advocates to take action and let your Members of Congress know they support the NEH. Please click on the link here where you can reach out to your own House representatives to urge them to vote against the amendment. This communication will be especially important to those of you with House representatives who may be more likely to vote to cut funding.

If it is an appropriate activity for your organization, please distribute the alert to your members or constituents.
