At the American Folklore Society (AFS), we are committed to protecting your privacy. We aim to collect only the information that is required to provide services to our members or event attendees. If you have any concerns or questions about data privacy, contact us at info@afsnet.org.
We are committed to on-going efforts to be explicit when we collect data about how it will be used, and to give you an opportunity to give or withhold consent.
AFS operates a WordPress website, http://americanfolkloresociety.org, which is our primary system for sharing information with the public. We may publish information that is submitted using the Calendar, News or Resource submission forms. Personal information that is submitted using the Newsletter subscription forms will not be shared with any other party, but will be used to email News to subscribers. Likewise, information submitted using the Contact Us form will be used only for further communication.
AFS operates a membership website, https://americanfolkloresociety.growthzoneapp.com/MIC/login/ which is our primary system for: managing all data, including membership and event registration transactions, that are collected online; recording membership, event, store and donation transaction details, including those that are paid by cash or check (transaction details include the date, billing name and mailing address, amount and method of payment, and product details; they do not include credit card, account or routing information); and communicating with members. This website is a service provided by Growth Zone; for more information about how Growth Zone manages the data collected on our website, see https://www.growthzone.com/privacy-policy/
AFS uses BluePay to process all credit card payments that we receive. AFS can access the billing information, like name and address data, but not the credit card information associated with these transactions. For more information about how BluePay manages data privacy, see https://www.bluepay.com/privacy-policy/.
In 2024, AFS is using a platform called Fourwaves to support annual meeting proposal submission and ultimately an online component of the conference this fall.
When you enter your proposal data into this Fourwaves submission form, Fourwaves does NOT take ownership of your data; they are only processing it to:
- communicate with you;
- operate the platform;
- perform some other specific purposes like maintenance and security.
Fourwaves stores the data it is processing in Canada on AWS (Amazon), and everything is encrypted using the best practices in the industry.
Read more about the Fourwaves privacy policy here.
