“Safety in the Field: A Reflection and Progress Report” by Mathilde Frances Lind from Vol. 138, Issue 549 (Summer 2025) of the Journal of American Folklore (JAF) reports on two foundational planning discussions about fieldwork safety. Lind outlines practical strategies for supporting students and early-career researchers, including the development of a safety toolkit for fieldworkers, educators, and public folklore organizations. The article also identifies key challenges and proposes four actionable steps to advance the conversation about safety practices.
Lind, along with AFS board members Betty Belanus and Ann Ferrell, will participate in Folklore Fieldwork and the Safety of Ethnographers—a session at the upcoming 2025 Annual Meeting Monday, October 20, 4:00–5:30pm. All are encouraged to read the report and think critically about how we care for ourselves and others in the field ahead of the session.
The University of Illinois Press has made this report and several other articles on JAF available to read for free through November 30, 2025.
