Vermont Folklife Center Publishes Comics Created in Collaboration with Migrant Workers

For the past several years the Vermont Folklife Center has been working with partners at the Open Door Clinic, the University of Vermont, and cartoonist Marek Bennett on the El viaje mas caro/Most Costly Journey project–an effort that creates comics drawn in collaboration with migrant workers on Vermont Dairy farms as resources to help address the impacts of depression, anxiety, isolation, fear and trauma on this vulnerable population. The comics are distributed as individual Spanish language comic books to workers, as well as being made available in English to create greater awareness of the needs of the people whose labor makes dairy farming in Vermont continue to be viable. 

The Vermont Folklife Center is happy to announce the publication of an English language collection of these comics under the title, The Most Costly Journey, featuring 20 comics drawn by a group of New England cartoonists in collaboration with workers on Vermont Farms. In addition it includes a Preface by novelist Julia Alvarez, an Introduction by cartoonist Stephen R. Bissette, a Foreword by project founder, nurse Julia Grand Doucet, and an Afterword by anthropologist Teresa Mares and folklorist Andy Kolovos. 
All profits from sales support the Open Door Clinic in its work to provide free health care services. The Vermont Folklife Center hopes to release a Spanish edition in the fall.
