AFS Executive Board Passes Resolution Affirming Support of the Cultural Diversity Committee

In light of recent concerns regarding goals and efforts toward diversity and inclusion in the U.S. as it impacts the work of the AFS Cultural Diversity Committee, at its spring 2025 meeting, the AFS Executive Board passed a resolution reaffirming its commitment to the work of the longstanding Cultural Diversity Committee.

Passed by the Executive Board, May 20, 2025
Whereas, the Cultural Diversity Committee is a standing committee of the American Folklore Society;
Whereas, the work of the Cultural Diversity Committee has strengthened the Society and, through the Society, the wider work of the field of folklore studies;
Whereas the Executive Board of the American Folklore Society has devoted due attention to considering the work of the Cultural Diversity Committee and its current charge;
Whereas, the Executive Board of the American Folklore Society deeply values the work of the CDC;
Whereas, the Executive Board of the American Folklore Society remains deeply committed to the purpose that informs the CDC’s work;
Whereas, the Executive Board of the American Folklore Society wants to support and encourage the membership of the CDC, past and present;
Whereas, the Executive Board of the American Folklore Society is steadfast in valuing cultural diversity as a deep source of strength in both the work of folklore studies and in society at large;
Now, therefore, be it resolved:
That the Executive Board of the American Folklore Society renews its commitment to the mission, members, and the work of the Cultural Diversity Committee.
