Special Offer for #AFSAM26: Free Access to JAF Article

As a service to AFSAM26 attendees, the University of Illinois Press and the American Folklore Society are offering free access through December 31 to “The Cantoya Fest: Festivalization and the Touristification of Security in a Conflict Zone,” by Mintzi Auanda MartÃnez-Rivera from the Summer 2026 Journal of American Folklore 139(553): 255-78.
The first article to document Cantoya Fest in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, México, the essay explores the relationship between festivalization and the touristification of security, and how these processes work together in a conflict zone. Author Mintzi Auanda MartÃnez-Rivera argues that, while not devoid of problems or contradictions, festivals such as the Cantoya Fest create bubbles of perceived security and safety and may provide and/or create sociocultural-political and economic alternatives in conflict zones.
