Samantha Brown Receives Samuelson Award

Congratulations to Samantha Ruth Brown (University of Oregon, Department of Geography), who received the Sue Samuelson Award for best student paper on food and foodways. Brown’s paper, “Burning Love: Pork Politics, Nationalism, and Othering in Contemporary Denmark,” was a well-explored and theorized analysis of a foodstuff in relation to ethnic and national identity. The Samuelson Award committee commended the discussion of tradition, especially concerning authenticity and creation and the role of women.

The $200 award is given by the Foodways Section of the American Folklore Society. The recipient will also receive travel support to attend the 2023 Annual Meeting.
