Folk Arts – Cultural Treasures Charter School in Philadelphia is seeking a Folk Arts Education Specialist to nurture, sustain, and grow our folk arts education program. Primary responsibilities include: coordinating folk arts residencies; training teachers in folk arts education; playing a lead role in Ritual Calendar Events; developing, implementing and improving systems of evaluation/ assessment/research; and grant writing, tracking and reporting.
The Folk Arts-Cultural Treasures Charter School is a K-8 charter school (named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School) located in Philadelphia’s Chinatown. FACTS was founded on the idea that the students, staff and families of our school are cultural treasures, that they are sources of knowledge and wisdom. Too often students, especially students living in poverty, immigrant/refugee students, students of color are asked to check their home cultures, their community knowledge and community ways of knowing at the door of the schoolhouse. FACTS seeks to reduce the home/school divide by valuing students’ home cultures as part of our regular teaching practice.
Consider how you could bring the creativity and power of folklife education to impacting young learners and contribute to advancing social justice in education by working at FACTS. To apply, mail a cover letter and resume to [email protected]. Questions can be directed to Ellen Somekawa, Executive Director, at [email protected].
