The Folk Arts-Cultural Treasures Charter School is a K-8 charter school (named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School) located in Philadelphia’s Chinatown. FACTS was founded on the idea that the students, staff and families of our school are cultural treasures, that they are sources of knowledge and wisdom. Too often students, especially students living in poverty, immigrant/refugee students, students of color are asked to check their home cultures, their community knowledge and community ways of knowing at the door of the schoolhouse. FACTS seeks to reduce the home/school divide by valuing students’ home cultures as part of our regular teaching practice.
