History and Folklore

The History and Folklore section of the American Folklore Society is devoted to historical approaches to the study of folklore and the history of folklore studies. The interests of the section include topics of historical folk narratives, folk biography, museology, oral history, local and regional history, material culture, public heritage, and historiography.

The section sponsors a Facebook page to keep its members connected. It sponsors panels, events, meetings, and forums at the annual American Folklore Society meeting and virtually at other times of the year. It publishes an annual journal TFH: Journal of History and Folklore. For publication information, write  Dr. Anthony Buccitelli at [email protected].

The section also sponsors prizes to promote the field, include the Wayland D. Hand Prize for an outstanding book in English integrating folklore and history and the Richard Reuss Prize for outstanding paper in English by a student on the integration of folklore and history. For more information, contact Simon J. Bronner [[email protected]], who also serves as section convener.
