Make Your Voice Heard in the 2022 Member Survey

AFS needs your help so that we can do our best work to meet your goals for our organization and the field. Every five years, the AFS Executive Board asks AFS members to share their views on our activities and intentions, as well as information about their professional experiences and themselves, to give us timely and accurate information for our present and future planning.
The 2022 Member Survey is now available securely online; the link was emailed to members. Members can contact [email protected] for help accessing the survey.
The survey will be available until December 30.
Many of the questions have been carried forward from past member surveys, conducted since 2006, so we can assess changes over time. In some instances, however, there are new questions, because AFS’s repertory of activities, and the opportunities and challenges that we face, are different today. We’re asking more questions “about you” than we have in the past, knowing that we risk being intrusive. We hope that you will excuse us on the grounds that we are not seeking information about individual profiles, but about our membership in aggregate. The survey data is anonymous. Still, we respect your privacy, and encourage you to choose the “prefer not to answer” option or skip questions as often as you see fit. (Note that choosing “prefer not to answer” tells us something important, while skipping questions communicates nothing clearly.)
The survey should take about 30-40 minutes to complete, depending on your responses. We are very grateful for your time and your insights. Your contribution is an invaluable part of our efforts to better serve you.
Two rules to bear in mind:
1. You can take a break from the survey or revise your submission at any time until December 30, but you must use the same computer and browser you started with. Your responses will be saved page by page, so you must hit “next” or “submit” to save your responses on any given page.
2. Because the survey remembers users by computer, it will only allow one response per computer. That means that if you have multiple members in your household, you will each need to use a different computer or browser to submit your response.
If the survey raises specific issues that you want to take up with the Board, please send them to [email protected]. Or, if you prefer, you can write your questions—and, if you wish, your name and address—at the end of the survey in the “other comments” section.
Please accept our thanks for your time and thought in completing this survey, and for your continuing support of AFS and the field. Look for a report on the survey results in AFS News in the spring.
We sometimes make mistakes, and we are happy to correct any errors that you may come across on our site. If you find an error, please let us know using the “submit a correction” link.
