Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth PhD is a cultural anthropologist and folklorist with research interests in human/environmental relationships, placemaking, museums and public scholarship, as well as university teaching. His book, Finding the Singing Spruce: Musical Instrument Makers and Appalachia’s Mountain Forests (West Virginia University Press, 2023), considers the meanings of work, place, and creative expression in drawing music from wood and was recently featured in the podcast channel New Books in Folklore.

This episode is hosted by folklorist and audio producer Rachel Hopkin. New Books in Folklore is a channel under the consortium New Books Network (NBN). The purpose of NBN interviews is to allow the authors to explain what they wrote in their books. These are not “debates” or “reviews.” The mission of the NBN is public education. Rachel Hopkin encourages more folklorists to be new hosts for New Books in Folklore to help fellow folklorists get the word out about their research and publications.
