Applications for AFS Section Prizes Due July 15

Applications for AFS section prizes now have a standardized July 15 deadline. Apply now for the following section prizes:

Barbro Klein Prize â€“ This prize is awarded by the Nordic-Baltic Folklore Section to a student for an outstanding conference paper, article-length essay, or research-based media production on a folklore topic having to do with Northern Europe and/or the diasporas of its various peoples.

Bertrand H. Bronson Paper Prize â€“ The Music and Song Section of the American Folklore Society awards this prize to the best student project that combines research and analysis of some aspect of a music or song tradition.

Dan Crowley Memorial Research Award â€“ This prize is awarded by the Creative Writing and Storytelling Section for an outstanding student paper that explores the process of storytelling and creating narrative, with an honorarium.

Don Yoder Prize â€“ Offered by the Folk Belief and Religious Folklife Section, this prize is for the Best Graduate Student Paper in Folk Belief or Religious Folklife, with an honorarium.

Dorothy Howard Folklore and Education Prize â€“ This monetary award recognizes a recently created resource or publication that effectively encourages K-12 educators or students to use the study of folklore and folkloristic approaches in an educational environment.

Elli Köngäs-Maranda Prizes â€“ The Women’s Section of the American Folklore Society, awards two prizes (student and professional) in honor of pioneering scholar Elli Köngäs-Maranda, recognizing superior work on women’s traditional, vernacular, or local culture and/or feminist theory and folklore.

Fernand Braudel Mediterranean Folklore Student Prize â€“ The Mediterranean Studies Section of the American Folklore Society awards this prize for an Outstanding Student Research Project in Mediterranean folklore, with an honorarium.

Folklore and Science Annual Prizes â€“ Folklore and Science Prizes are awarded to presentation-length papers (approximately 10 pages of text), focusing on boundaries, intersections, and interdisciplinary exchanges between folklore and science.

John Wesley Work III Award â€“ Sponsored by the African American Folklore Section, this award honors and spotlights applied folklorists, ethnographer, and ethnomusicologists who actively focus on the research, documentation, recording, and highlighting of African American culture through performance, written word, and music in their scholarly works.

Sue Samuelson Award â€“ The Foodways Section provides this award for the best student paper on food and foodways. Papers should be based on original fieldwork or research and utilize current folkloric approaches to analysis and interpretation.

W. W. Newell Prize – The Children’s Folklore Section sponsors this prize, providing a monetary award for the best essay by a student (undergraduate or graduate) or emerging scholar on a topic in children’s folklore.

Warren E. Roberts Prize â€“ This monetary award honors scholarship by a student (undergraduate or graduate) in folk art and material culture. Multidisciplinary work as well as work in multimedia presentation formats is accepted.

William A. Wilson Prize â€“ The Folk Belief and Religious Folklife Section gives this prize for the Best Undergraduate Student Paper in Folk Belief or Religious Folklife, with an honorarium.
