Committees and Working Groups
Committees and working groups research problems and implement projects, under the guidance of the Executive Board, to address matters of concern to the American Folklore Society. The AFS President appoints members to serve on committees — with the exception of the Nominating Committee, who are elected by AFS members.

Cultural Diversity Committee
The purpose of the Cultural Diversity Committee is to undertake research and other activities regarding priorities and strategies to diversify the Society's membership and to keep the Society engaged with diverse communities, and, based on those activities, recommends policies and actions to the Executive Board.

International Issues Committee
The International Issues Committee works to identify priorities and strategies to keep the Society engaged with folklorists and folklore organizations worldwide and, based on those activities, recommends policies and actions to the Executive Board.

Membership Committee
The Membership Committee develops strategies and initiatives focused on growth and development of the Society’s membership and of the services the Society provides to its members, and, based on those activities, recommends policies and actions to the Executive Board.

Mentoring Committee
The Mentoring Committee is responsible for creating programs and presentations that serve the mentoring and professional development needs of Society members, and, based on those activities, recommends policies and actions to the Executive Board

Nominating Committee
The Nominating committee is elected to serve the American Folklore Society by making nominations for elected offices and suggestions to the Executive Board for appointed positions.

Publications Committee
The Publications Committee serves to recruit and recommend to the Executive Board the appointment of Society editors and to monitor the state of all Society publications in all media and suggest publication-related policies or actions to the Executive Board

Ad Hoc Committees and Working Groups
Ad hoc committees and working groups are formed by the Executive Board to research and make recommendations about how the American Folklore Society should address specific issues of immediate concern. The AFS President appoints members to ad hoc committees, while members may petition the Board to form working groups on particular problems.

AFS-MLA Liaison Committee
This ad hoc community works to strengthen the relationship between AFS and Modern Language Association (MLA) and to program folklore activities at the MLA Annual Convention.

Committee on Contingent Workforce Concerns
This ad hoc committee makes recommendations to the Board in April 2018 for policies and actions to support adjunct, freelance, independent, and alt-ac members of the Society.

Development Committee
This ad hoc committee advises the Executive Board and Executive Director on development matters.

Media and Public Outreach Committee
This ad hoc committee was formed to communicate and bring attention to the work of the AFS, its members, and the field of folklore to the public, academic and community scholars, government agencies, and the media.

Curricular Opportunities Working Group
This working group provides professional development opportunities to the membership to support more equitable and inclusive folklore academic curriculum and public practice through infusion of knowledges from marginalized communities.
