Samantha Ruth Brown Receives 2023 Barbro Klein Prize in Nordic and Baltic Folklore

The Nordic-Baltic Section is excited to announce that Samantha Ruth Brown has received the 2023 Barbro Klein Prize in Nordic and Baltic Folklore for outstanding article-length essay on folklore and Northern Europe.
Brown, a PhD Candidate in Geography at the University of Oregon, received the Barbro Klein Prize for her submission, “Burning Love: Pork Politics, Nationalism, and Othering in Contemporary Denmark.” The piece is an ambitious and important examination of the intersections of folklore—specifically foodways—and politics in the context of xenophobic and exclusionary Danish policies. The contextualization of “Frikadellekrigen” is clear, the analysis convincing, and the research, especially on the contemporary discourse in the media, is well done.
