Portland teachers strike for wrap-around services for students; schools that are safe, well-maintained, and fully staffed; and educator resources. AFS is supporting Portland teachers by offering access to professional development workshops at the Annual Meeting and information about opportunities for meeting attendees to support and participate in the strike.

AFS has just learned that teachers in the Portland city school district plan to strike starting Wednesday Nov. 1. We want participants in the meeting to be aware of the impending strike and to learn ways to support the teachers where possible.
As of October 27, the AFS office is effectively closed. Staff members are working hard to make the 2023 AFS Annual Meeting a success, so they may not be available to respond quickly to your email. If your question does not relate to the Annual Meeting, please expect a response after Nov. 17.

This year, the American Folklore Society is offering three commemorative notebooks to highlight the work of Oregon and Washington artists as part of the Annual Meeting in Portland. These Annual Meeting notebooks are designed to facilitate notetaking, doodling, planning, and networking throughout the meeting and beyond.
The American Folklore Society is pleased to have received a major gift to endow the longstanding Benjamin A. Botkin Prize, which is presented annually to an individual (or sometimes two) for significant lifetime achievement in public folklore. The endowment, which was provided by Botkin’s daughter, Dorothy Rosenthal, of Amherst, MA, allows AFS to increase the prize amount while also securing the distribution of future awards.
