AFS and some AFS Sections provide stipends to support participation in the AFS Annual Meeting. See opportunities below.
Application for the AFS and Section Travel Stipends has not opened yet, but requests for financial support to offset costs of Annual Meeting registration fees are open through April 1, 2025. Notifications of financial assistance will take place in early May.
AFS-sponsored financial support is made possible by generous donor contributions. If you can make a contribution now to help fund others’ access to the annual meeting, thank you!

AFS Gerald L. Davis Fund Grants
The American Folklore Society provides a limited number of grants, ranging from $500 to $2000, to foster the participation, inclusion, and affirmation of persons of color who are invested in community development.

AFS Stipends for International Participants
AFS offers a limited number of travel stipends on a competitive basis for folklorists and other cultural specialists from outside the United States and Canada.

Polly Stewart Student Travel Stipend
Each year, the Women's Section awards a travel stipend to one or more students to attend the American Folklore Society meeting.

Archie Green Student Travel Award
The Public Programs Section will provide up to three awards of up to $500 each, named for folklorist and activist Archie Green of San Francisco, for students to defray costs for traveling to the AFS annual meeting.

Elaine J. Lawless Travel Award
The Folk Belief and Religious Folklife Section awards a travel stipend in honor of distinguished folklorist, religious folklife scholar, and professor, Elaine J. Lawless, of up to $500 to be awarded to a graduate student to participate in the Society’s annual meeting.
